Moynalvey U-13 girls lost out to a stronger Donaghmore/Ashbourne team in the Div. 2 league final played at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Saturday afternoon 1st July.
Moynalvey 0-7
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-8
Huge strides have and are being made by both these sets of girls who having contested the Div. 3 under 12 final last year find themselves working their way through Division 2 this year to the final stage again.
It was devastation for Moynalvey, losing out to the same opponents in the final for a second year in a row, with Donaghmore/Ashbourne claiming honours in today’s final on a 3-8 to 0-7 score line.
Moynalvey had defeated the same opposition earlier in the group by three points in a rip-roaring game of two halves, but as the saying goes ‘it’s all on the day’ and Donaghmore/Ashbourne proved that in today’s final with a convincing win.
The sides couldn’t be separated early on as Donaghmore/Ashbourne took the lead three times in the opening fifteen minutes only to be pegged back each time with points from Aoife O’Shea and two Eva Gannon frees to leave it 0-3 apiece.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne with the wind at their backs in the opening half tagged on a further three points before half time to lead 0-7 to 0-3 at the break.
Any hope of a Moynalvey comeback were dashed when the first score of the second half in the 7th minute went Ashbourne’s way finding the net for the first of their three green flags.
A brace of Eva Gannon points, one from play and the other a free left it double scores 1-7 to 0-5 nine minutes into the second half.
A second and third Donaghmore/Ashbourne goals either side of an Eva Gannon point left the town side with a commanding 3-7 to 0-6 lead.
But for some fine saves by Moynalvey ‘keeper Hannah Regan Ashbourne may have found the net a couple more times.
A point from the impressive Nicole Lawless was countered by the final point of the game for Donaghmore/Ashbourne to leave the full time score 3-8 to 0-7.
Never easy to lose a final, but the girls are a credit to their club, families and coaches Denis, Alan, Barry, Aileen & Wille to be competing at such a high level against opposition with much larger populations.
