Moynalvey went down to Gaeil Colmcille on a 3-15 to 2-7 score line in round two of Group C of the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship at St. Loman’s Park Trim on Sunday afternoon August 29th.
Moynalvey 2-7
Gaeil Colmcille 3-15
It was Gaeil Colmcille who started the stronger with three points on the board after five minutes, two Ryan Farnham points and a Seamus Mattimoe free.
Moynalvey’s first score came in the 11th minute from a David McLoughlin free, with Gaeil Colmcille replying almost immediately with a point from midfielder Phillip Ward leaving the score 0-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes.
Cillian O’Sullivan opened his account with a free and two minutes later found the back of the Kells’ net after Adam Murphy had fielded a high ball in to turn Paul Tormay setting him through on goal only to see Justin Carry Lynch save his effort, but the rebound fell to Cillian O’Sullivan who finished to an empty net.
Brian ‘Beano” Hanlon added a point from a free for Gaeil Colmcille to leave the sides level at the first water break, 1-5 apiece.
Just after the water break a superb point from Moynalvey full forward Adam Murphy put Moynalvey ahead for the first time. However, Gaeil Colmcille went on to add a further four unanswered points from Hanlon (2), Phillip Ward and Ryan Farnham to leave four in it at half time, 0-10 to 1-3.
Gaeil Colmcille lost talisman Seamus Mattimoe to injury at half time, with his marker Moynalvey’s Brian O’Reilly having been replaced earlier in the half with injury also.
Gaeil Colmcille’s Evan Sheridan pointed soon after the restart to extend their lead to five. Then came a purple patch of Moynalvey scoring, with points from David McLoughlin (2) and 1-1 from Cillian O’Sullivan, the goal a well-placed finish low to the corner across Justin Carry Lynch’s goal to put Moynalvey a point up for just the second time in the game 11 minutes into the second half, 2-6 to 0-11.
Ryan Farnham pointed to draw the sides level, then came the sucker punch for Moynalvey having recouped the earlier five point deficit to claw themselves back into the game two defensive errors within as many minutes allowed Gaeil Colmcille in for two goals, the first from Fionn Reilly and the second from Evan Sheridan.
Within five minutes Moynalvey found themselves a point up to seven down, with the second half water break score reading 2-13 to 2-6 to the Kells’ men.
Gaeil Colmcille outscored Moynalvey 1-2 to 0-1 in the final quarter with the goal coming from the penalty spot by Brian Hanlon to leave the final score read 3-15 to 2-7 in favour of Lar Wall’s men.
The final round group games see Gaeil Colmcille take on Simonstown Gaels, while Moynalvey take on Wolfe Tones in a must win game for John Donoghue’s team.
