A good team performance enabled Moynalvey secure the two points in this A league game against Clann na Gael played in very wet conditions in Athboy on Friday evening, June 15th.
Clann na Gael 2 – 4 Moynalvey 1 – 16
Aided by the breeze Moynalvey were quick to settle and built up a 6 point lead after 20 minutes courtesy of points from Robbie Quinlan, James Weldon, John Donoghue and Willie Byrne as well as a fantastic goal from Damian Dixon from 20 yards after a length of the field move involving a number of Moynalvey players. This left the score 1 – 4 to 0 – 1 to the visitors.
Clann na Gael however came right back into contention before half time scoring 2 goals and a point which Moynalvey responded to with 4 points of their own from Willie Byrne (2), Dixon and a John Donoghue fifty, leaving it 1 – 8 to 2 – 2 at the interval.
Sensing a big second half effort would be required playing against the breeze and up the slight slope at Athboy, Moynalvey rallied and proceeded to dominate the vast majority of the second half. Clann na Gael had a couple of wides early on in the second period but were then camped inside their own half as points from Byrne (3), Quinlan (2), Donoghue (2) and Dixon meant Moynalvey pulled further clear to secure a well deserved victory. Indeed Clann na Gael’s only 2 points of the half came in the last 2 minutes of the game.
This victory leaves Moynalvey top of the league just after the half way stage but with a number of tough games yet to play.
