Moynalvey suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Donaghmore/Ashbourne in the final game in Group A of the Junior ‘C’ Championship at Dunshaughlin on Saturday evening August 7th.
Moynalvey 0-11 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 4-10
Although both sides had already qualified for the knockout stages of the championship, it was Donaghmore/Ashbourne who topped the group with Moynalvey going through to the Quarter finals in second place. Moynalvey playing with the wind at their backs had run up an early lead of 0-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes, with scores from Ciaran Ennis (3) and Anthony Forde. However Donaghmore/Ashbourne levelled matters up a minute later when finding the back of the net. The 19th minute saw the turning point of the game when Moynalvey had Ciaran Ennis given his marching orders and found themselves five points adrift of their opponents. Even with 14 men, Moynalvey failed to lie down and reeled off a further three points from Ciaran Collins (2) and PJ Walsh. They looked to be heading for the break within a score of their opponents, only to suffer another sucker punch on the stroke of half time, when Donaghmore/Ashbourne found the net for a third time leaving the interval score line reading 3-4 to 0-7.
Having held a commanding six point lead at the break, Donaghmore/Ashbourne restructured their line using full advantage of the extra man to fully take control of the second period. Moynalvey did add a further four points to their tally from Walsh (2), Brian Conneely and substitute Cathal Sheridan, but it was Donaghmore/Ashbourne who ran out convincing 11 point winners.
