Moynalvey suffered an eight point loss to hosts Ballinlough in this Div. 2 A League encounter played at Ballinlough on Saturday evening May 21st.
Ballinlough 2-16 Moynalvey 2-8
Having defeated Simonstown Gaels in the Senior championship seven days earlier, a much changed Moynalvey side went down to their Intermediate opponents in this round seven tie of the league. Of the twenty players used in that SFC win last week Moynalvey were down ten of those starting this game.
Ballinlough more or less sewed up the two points on offer here in the opening half, running Moynalvey ragged and clocking up a half time advantage of thirteen points, 2-10 to 0-3. The home side had built up an eight point lead by the time Moynalvey eventually posted their first score in the 24th minute through Dan Treacy, having been guilty of several bad wides in that opening period. Moynalvey’s other first half points came courtesy of Anthony Forde and a James O’Neill free.
Ballinlough extended their lead to 14 points ninety seconds after the restart with a converted free. Moynalvey’s Shane Lenehan & Ballinlough’s Peadar Byrne traded scores before Moynalvey reeled off 2-2 within four minutes to narrow the deficit to six points nine minutes into the second period. The two points were James O’Neill frees, while the goals were scored by Stephen Donoghue & Dan Treacy. Donoghue’s goal finished through a cluster of bodies from an acute angle and Treacy’s fired to the back of the net after his initial effort at goal was blocked, leaving the score 2-12 to 2-6.
Three frees and a point from play for Ballinlough and a brace of James O’Neill points for Moynalvey rounded off the scoring to leave the score board reading 2-16 to 2-8 at the full time whistle, handing Ballinlough a well deserved third victory of the league campaign.
