Moynalvey made it two wins from two in the Corn Na Boinne with a hard fought win over Longwood under lights in Longwood on Thursday night 22nd February.
Longwood 0-9
Moynalvey 2-8
A game evenly contested throughout, with Moynalvey outscoring the home side ten scores to nine. Ultimately, it was Moynalvey’s two second half goals that proved the difference, although the home side will be left to rue two first half goal opportunities in particular which were blazed over the cross bar.
Although misfiring in the first half, the visitors moved up a gear in the second half and once Vinny Walsh hit 1-1 early in the second half Moynalvey never looked back and ran out five point winners.
It was the Walsh brothers, Vinny first followed by Barry with Moynalvey’s first couple of points, with a Ryan Moore point for the ‘Wood in between.
A Michael Brady free made it 0-3 to 0-1 after eleven minutes, but a Ryan Moore free and a point from Gavin Griffin levelled matters three points apiece on the quarter hour mark.
Kyle O’Malley chipped in with what would prove to be Moynalvey’s last score of the half, with the home side adding a trio of points with two Ryan Moore frees and Sean Coloe to lead 0-7 to 0-4 at half time.
Half Time:
Longwood 0-7 Moynalvey 0-4
A rejuvenated Moynalvey hit their opponents for 1-1 within five minutes of the restart, both sores coming from Vinny Walsh, the goal after Padraic Harnan fielded brilliantly before sending in a perfect pass to Walsh inside who made no mistake blasting past Kevin Maguire in the Longwood goals.
Sean Coloe levelled matters, with a booming Craig Gilsenan point from the right wing handing the advantage back to Moynalvey soon after. Then came Vinny Walsh’s and Moynalvey’s second goal of the night to leave it 2-6 to 0-8 with 50 minutes played.
Once again it was that man Sean Cole who continued to drive his team forward, splitting the Moynalvey uprights with another excellent effort to leave it a one score game with seven minutes remaining.
