Moynalvey made the long trip to Oldcastle worthwhile as a good team performance ensured they emerged with a 9 point victory after a hard fought game against the hosts.
Oldcastle 0 – 7 Moynalvey 2 – 10
Both teams entered this game with unbeaten league records with Oldcastle’s 3 victorys and 1 draw to date comparing favourably to Moynalvey’s record of 1 win and 3 draws. However, it was Moynalvey who held on to their record when taking a grip on proceedings from the 20th minute on to push on for victory.
The game opened tit for tat with 3 Oldcastle points being responded to by 2 Cathal Sheridan frees and a John Donoghue effort from play. Moynalvey then took control posting 5 points on the trot between the 20th and 29th minute with the scores coming from James Weldon, Willie Byrne and Sheridan (3). A late Oldcastle point left it 0 – 8 to 0 – 4 in the visitors favour at the interval.
Oldcastle opened the second half scoring with a point before Cathal Sheridan unluckily saw his goalbound effort crash off the Oldcastle crossbar and rebound to safety. However, the Oldcastle goal only held out for a couple of more minutes as a well worked Moynalvey move saw PJ Walsh crash the ball to the net to leave Moynalvey 1 – 8 to 0 – 5 clear with 20 minutes remaining.
Oldcastle scored 2 more points to close the deficit to 4 points but that was as good as it got as a length of the field Moynalvey move resulted in Cathal Sheridan pointing before the same player made no mistake when goaling to leave Moynalvey 2 – 9 to 0 – 7 clear. Some great defending and a final James Weldon point from near the sideline left Moynalvey victorious on a 2 – 10 to 0 – 7 final scoreline.
