Moynalvey lost out to home side St. Ultans by six points in the opening round of the 2015 Division 3 B League on a 0-11 to 1-5 score line at Sean Newman Park on Sunday afternoon February 8th.
St. Ultans 0-11 Moynalvey 1-5
The host side took the early advantage clocking up four unanswered points in the opening seven minutes before Moynalvey eventually opened their account in the 10th minute with a placed ball from full forward Ciaran Ennis. The deficit was reduced to two when a well worked move up the field was slotted over the crossbar by Moynalvey’s wing forward James Reilly. This proved to be Moynalvey’s final score of the opening period and St. Ultans tagged on a further brace of points before the half time whistle to hold a four point interval lead on a 0-6 to 0-2 score line.
Two minutes after the break the margin between the sides was reduced to the minimum when a James O’Neill point effort dropped short and the ball broke to Johnny Carey who had the simple task of fisting home to an empty net. Four points on the trot from the home side gave them a double scores advantage after 18 minutes of the second period, 0-10 to 1-2. Two Ennis frees in the 55th and 57th minutes left jus the kick of a ball between the sides. A converted free from Ultans in the 28th minute was followed by a rasping effort from distance by Moynalvey substitute John Francis Martin which split the uprights off the crossbar, leaving St. Ultans deserved three point winners on a 0-11 to 1-5 score line. The clubs meet again at the same venue next Sunday in the 2nd round of the A League.
