Moynalvey were eight point winners over home side St. Ultans in round 2 of the Division 2 ‘A’ League at Sean Newman Park on Sunday afternoon February 15th on a 1-17 to 0-12 score line.
St. Ultans 0-12 Moynalvey 1-17
For the second time in seven days Moynalvey were visitors to Bohermeen, this time the result was reversed as Moynalvey claimed the 2 points on offer in the sides A League clash, following B league defeat to St. Ultans last Sunday.
Moynalvey got off to the perfect start after only 30 seconds when a high ball into the danger area was flicked to the back of St. Ultan’s goalkeeper Cian Farnan’s net by Moynalvey corner forward Shane Lenihan for the game’s only goal. Thirty seconds later Moynalvey wing forward James Weldon split the uprights giving Moynalvey a 1-1 to 0-00 advantage. St. Ultans opened their account in the 4th minute with a point from play from Kevin Galligan, which was followed by a converted free from Cian Rennicks. Moynalvey corner forward David McLoughlin then pointed which was countered by St. Ultan’s Mark Allen seven minutes later. Both sides No. seven’s split the uprights within sixty seconds of each other, Dan Treacy for Moynalvey in the 13th minute and Gearoid Rennicks for Ultans in the 14th. Moynalvey midfielder John Donoghue sent over the next two points of the game leaving Moynalvey 1-5 to 0-4 to the good after 19 minutes, five minutes later St. Ultans Sean Power pointed to narrow the deficit to just a kick of the ball. Three points in the final five minutes of the half from the visitors Mark O’Sullivan (2) and a second point of the game from Dan Treacy gave Moynalvey a 1-8 to 0-5 interval lead.
Sixty seconds after the restart Moynalvey’s lead was extended further when good lead up play by Shane Browne and Dan Treacy set up Ciaran Ennis who rounded his man on the end line to clip the ball over the black spot and two minutes later county player Mark O’Sullivan sent over, leaving it 1-10 to 0-5 to the men in maroon and white. Moynalvey’s David Reilly opened his account in the 35th minute before St. Ultans reeled off seven unanswered points to cut the margin between the sides to just two points. However Moynalvey finished the stronger of the two sides which saw a purple patch of scoring from substitutes James O’Neill (2) and Robert Lawless, with two frees from David Mcloughlin who took over place kicking duties following the departure of O’Sullivan through injury, leaving Moynalvey run out eight point winners on a 1-17 to 0-12 score line.
