Moynalvey advanced to the semi finals of this years Junior A championship after a convincing 17 point victory over Kilbride in this quarter final played in Walterstown on Saturday, September 6th.
Moynalvey 4 – 9 Kilbride 0 – 4
Moynalvey played with the advantage of the breeze in the first half and led by 1 – 4 to no score at the interval courtesy of points from Cathal Sheridan (3 including 2 frees) and John Donoghue as well as an expertly taken goal from full forward Willie Byrne. Kilbride defended reasonably well in this period and Moynalvey would have been disappointed not to be further ahead at the break after hitting 6 wides.
Kilbride had to come flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half but this proved to be their downfall as Moynalvey took advantage of the gaps that began to appear in their defence. Kilbride finally got their first score of the game 5 minutes into the second half from a free but Moynalvey responded emphatically with a Sheridan free and a well taken goal from Mark O’Sullivan after he cut in from the sideline and buried the ball to the roof of the net from 14 yards. Kilbride scored a second point but again Moynalvey responded by cutting through the Kilbride defence twice in the space of 4 minutes with O’Sullivan on hand on both occasions to despatch to the net and complete his hat trick. This left the scoreline at 4 – 5 to 0 – 2 with 18 minutes remaining and the match was all but over.
Sheridan added another free to which Kilbride responded before Moynalvey scored 3 of the last 4 points from Sheridan, Donoghue and Brian Conneely to leave the final margin at 17 points.
Moynalvey now advance to a semi final showdown with a very good Longwood team for a place in this year’s final.
