Moynalvey went down to visitors Rathkenny on a 3-8 to 0-7 score line in the opening round of the Div. 2 A League played at Kiltale on Sunday afternoon February 1st.
Moynalvey 0-7 Rathkenny 3-8
New Moynalvey manager Barry O’Keeffe suffered defeat in his debut game in charge as his team lost out to Rathkenny who they beat in both the championship and league opener last year. In last year’s league opener it was Moynalvey who came out on top by two points but this year’s league opener between two of the four Senior teams in Division 2 proved to be a one sided affair, with Rathkenny holding an eleven point half time lead as the host side Moynalvey failed to score in the opening period.
Moynalvey outscored the visitors 0-7 to 1-3 in the second period but ultimately Rathkenny had the 2 points on offer wrapped up at the interval and as cliché says goals win games. Moynalvey’s second half tally of seven points were accounted for by David McLoughlin (3), James Weldon (2), Shane Lenihan and half time substitute John Donoghue.
