Moynalvey seconds were eliminated from this years Junior C championship after a late goal saw them fall to a 2 point defeat to neighbours Blackhall Gaels in this quarter final replay held in Dunganny on Wednesday, August 12th.
Moynalvey 4 – 5 Blackhall Gaels 3 – 10
Like the original game, Moynalvey suffered a nightmare start falling 9 points behind after 10 minutes on a scoreline of 2 – 3 to 0 – 0. However, they then got a foothold on the game and goals from Ray Ryan, Shane Collins and Ger McHale as well as a Collins pointed free left the half time score at Blackhall 2 – 7 Moynalvey 3 – 1.
On the restart, Moynalvey set about reducing the 3 point deficit and a point followed by a goal from Ray Ryan remarkably had Moynalvey level on a scoreline of 4 – 2 to 2 – 8 with 15 minutes remaining. Blackhall pointed to retake the lead but points from Shane Collins (2) and Sean Carroll had Moynalvey 2 clear and seemingly on course for a semi final spot. Blackhall Gaels, however, had other ideas and a well worked move saw them goal with 5 minutes remaining to take a one point lead. Moynalvey missed a gilt edged chance to level through Ger McHale and Blackhall pointed in the final minute to secure a 2 point victory and progress to a semi final meeting with St Peter’s Dunboyne this coming Sunday.
This was a disappointing end to the season for the Moynalvey second string. However, a number of these players will hope to make an impact on the first team in the Junior A championship in the coming weeks.
