Moynalvey’s second team launched an amazing second half recovery to snatch a draw in this keenly contested Junior C championship tie played in Dunsany on Monday evening, July 2nd.
Moynalvey 1 – 9 Dunboyne 0 – 12
Trailing by 0 – 10 at 0 – 1 at half time, things looked very bleak for the maroon and whites, but all players set about knuckling down and fighting for every ball and they outscored their opponents by 1 – 8 to 0 – 2 in the second half to grab a deserved draw.
Moynalvey had a number of bad wides as well as a number of instances when they kicked the ball into the Dunboyne goalkeepers hands in the first half and gradually Dunboyne got on top. The black and ambers dominated the second quarter to score a succession of points and leave it 0 – 10 to 0 – 1 at the break with Moynalvey’s solitary score coming from Shane Collins.
Moynalvey refused to give up however and went on to dominate the second half. Anthony Brien was in excellent form at centre half back and this along with some resolute defending from Sean Weston, Zane Donoghue, David Kane, Denis O’Shea and Giles Drumm gave Moynalvey the platform to push on and score a number of points from Ger McHale (2) and Shane Collins (4). However the score was still 0 – 12 to 0 – 7 in Dunboyne’s favour entering the last ten minutes.
It was then that the game came to life when a move involving Brian Gilsenan, Shane Collins and Ger McHale was smashed to the back of the Dunboyne net by Raymond Ryan. Brian Gilsenan then surged forward to score a great point and leave the minimum in it entering injury time. With Moynalvey taking control all over the field, they surged forward for an equaliser and it came in the last kick of the game when Shane Collins capped a fantastic personal performance by scoring a free out of his hands from fifty yards.
This was a real game of 2 halves with a draw being the fairest result. This was Moynalvey’s second draw of the current championship campaign.
