Moynalvey eased to a comfortable victory over Kilmainhamwood in the opening round of the Junior ‘C’ football championship at Cortown on Friday evening May 28th.
Moynalvey 3-19 Kilmainhamwood 0-3
In what was a completely one side game, it was Kilmainhamwood who opened the scoring in the second minute, but had to wait until injury time of the opening period to add their next score as Moynalvey registered 11 points in the opening period from Alan Donnelly, Phillip Garvey, Shane McGann, Darren Brennan, PJ Walsh (2), Ciaran Ennis (2) and Ciaran Collins (3), giving them a nine point advantage at the break.
Upon the resumption the Moynalvey forwards continued to keep the score board ticking over with points from Walsh & Garvey and substitute Luke Duffy found the net in the 4th minute of the half. Kilmainhamwood added their third and final score in the 38th minute but lost a man to a red card three minutes later. The remainder of the game was shooting practice for Moynalvey as they clocked up further points from Duffy, Collins, McGann, Walsh, Garvey and substitute Giles Drum. They raised two more green flags when Garvey fisted a broken ball to the back of the net and full back Brian Byrne unusually found himself at the opposite end of the pitch to drive home from close range in the 55th minute.
While Moynalvey will be pleased with the performances of Brian Byrne, Darren Brennan, Robert Quinlan, Phillip Garvey & Ciaran Collins it is hard to read into such a one sided game and sterner challenges are sure to be met in the future.
