Fourth league win solidifies mid-table position going into last round

Moynalvey picked up their fourth win of the A league with a nine point win over visitors Walterstown at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Tuesday evening 6th June.

Moynalvey 3-11
Walterstown 2-5

Having started the league poorly, the last five games have seen Moynalvey pick up seven points from a possible ten available to solidify their mid table position in the Div. 1B A League going into the final round.

Boosted by the availability of Cillian O’Sullivan and his brother Mark who was lining out in the maroon jersey for the first time this year following his recent involvement with the Christy Ring Cup Champions, Moynalvey picked up a convincing nine point win in the penultimate round of the A League.

The first ten minutes of this game was an evenly contested affair, with the sides level 0-3 apiece.

Walterstown opened the scoring through Adam Quinn after just twenty seconds, with Moynalvey’s first score coming ninety seconds later from David McLoughlin.

Walterstown points from Brian O’Connell and Mark McCormack were countered by Cillian O’Sullivan and Paul Corcoran to draw the sides level, 0-3 to 0-3, for a second and final time in the 8th minute.

From here on Moynalvey took control of the game, outscoring their opponents 1-5 to 0-1 in the second quarter.

Moynalvey’s points coming from David McLoughlin (2), Vinny Walsh, Mark O’Sullivan and 1-1 from Darren Brennan. The goal a well worked move with Vinny Walsh overturning the ball at the back, Conor Quinn bursting out of defence with a good ball to Craig Gilsenan, with Donal smith in turn finding Darren Brennan in space with a rangy fist pass, with Brennan giving Black’s ‘keeper John Davis no chance with the finish.

Cillian O’Sullivan and Adam Quinn traded scores, before what could have been a chance of revival for Walterstown when they were awarded a penalty. However, Walterstown were denied with Moynalvey goalkeeper Conor Egan getting down low to his right to produce a brilliant save.

A further 1-1 from Moynalvey, a point from Vinny Walsh and a McLoughlin goal put eleven points between the sides with 18 minutes of the second half played, 2-10 to 0-5.

The concession of two sloppy late goals either side of a Donal Smith point rounded off the scoring giving Moynalvey their fourth win of the campaign on a full-time score line of 3-11 to 2-5.

In reality Moynalvey’s winning margin could’ve been greater but the woodwork denying further goals with rasping attempts from Craig Gilsenan and David McLoughlin hitting the crossbar, with a close range Cillian O’Sullivan free also hitting the post.

Best for the winners were Conor Egan, Craig Gilsenan, Mark O’Sullivan, Vinny Walsh, Darren Brennan and David Reilly.
