Moynalvey opened their 2010 Div 3 B League campaign with defeat at the hands of hosts Donaghmore/Ashbourne on Sunday 7th March.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-10 Moynalvey 0-10
Moynalvey opened the brighter of the two sides, opening up a two point lead through points from the two Ciarans, Ennis & Collins. However, Donaghmore/Ashbourne gained the initiative as they found the net with their first score of the game in the 9th minute. Things were once again level three minutes later when David Durkan opened his account for the afternoon. Moynalvey proceeded to add further points from Collins & Brian Reilly leaving them two points to the good after the opening quarter. The sides then traded points, with Moynalvey’s effort coming from full forward Alan Donnelly, before the hosts levelled matters up again in the 30th minute. Donnelly having been unlucky to see an effort at goal rebound off a post minutes earlier pointed again deep into injury time to leave the men in maroon and white ahead by the minimum at the interval on a score line of 0-7 to 1-3.
With the wind behind their backs the hosts made a quick start to the second period, levelling matters up once again in the 2nd minute of the half with a pointed effort from play. Moynalvey forged ahead a minute later when Ennis converted a free after Ciaran Collins had been hauled to the ground. However, it wasn’t until the 47th minute that Moynalvey would register on the score board again, again through a pointed Ennis free, while in the mean time Donaghmore/Ashbourne had posted five unanswered points. Moynalvey had replacement goal keeper Brian Reilly to thank who made the switch to goals just before half time when Giles Drum went off injured to thank that they were not further behind when he brilliantly finger tipped a drive at goal over the bar in the 42nd minute. Donnelly reduced the margin between the sides to two points when he fired over a sublime point from the right wing in the 48th minute. Moynalvey threw all they had at the home side over the remaining minutes, but to no avail as Donaghmore/Ahbourne tagged on the final point of the game in the 57th minute meaning the goal was the difference between the sides at the final whistle.
