A League opens with defeat

By promoynalvey Mon 20th Feb

Moynalvey suffered a comprehensive eight point loss at the hands of Na Fianna in the opening round of the 2012 Division 3 A League at Enfield on Sunday afternoon February 19th.

Na Fianna 1-11 Moynalvey 1-3

Na Fianna started brightest of the two sides finding themselves three points to the good after ten minutes of play, before Moynalvey found their range in the 15th minute courtesy of a Mark O’Sullivan effort. The home side hit a further trio of unanswered points giving them a five point advantage with five minutes of the half remaining. Moynalvey’s second score of the afternoon was a somewhat fortunate one, as a point attempt from John Donoghue dropped short into the goal mouth area and confusion in the Na Fianna defence saw the ball somehow find its way over the goal line. Both sides added a further point to their tallies before the interval, with the visitor’s score once again coming from the boot of O’Sullivan, this time from a free kick.

Three minutes after the break Na Fianna were unlucky not to raise a green flag of their own, only to be denied by a superb save from Moynalvey net minder Ollie Regan. However the Enfield/Baconstown side did manage to find the net mid way through the second period, pushing their advantage to seven points having hit 1-2 without reply after half time. Moynalvey’s sole score of the second half came in the 47th minute when Darren Brennan split the posts. Four minutes later the host side were denied a second goal when Ollie Regan once again produced a fantastic save. Two further Na Fianna scores in the final minutes left the score line reading 1-11 to 1-3 in favour of the home side at the final whistle.
