A depleted Moynalvey side were passed at the death as 2 late points from St Ultans handed them victory in this keenly contested B league clashed played in Bohermeen on Saturday, June 24th.
St Ultans 1 – 12 Moynalvey 1 – 10
Missing a number of players due to injury, holidays and other reasons, Moynalvey were forced into bringing veteran Ollie Gilsenan out of retirement for his first game in over 5 years so as to make up a starting team. Facing a strong St Ultans outfit however, Moynalvey were not fazed and dominated the majority of the first half to lead by 1 – 9 to 1 – 4 at the break, with the scores coming from James Weldon (1 – 4), Shane Collins (0 – 3) and a point each for Denis Hoban and Brian Conneely.
St Ultans had the elements in their favour in the second half and set about reducing the deficit by scoring the first 2 points of the half. However, Moynalvey responded with a Shane Collins effort and led by 1 – 10 to 1 – 6 with 20 minutes remaining. Then disaster struck as the comeback kid Gilsenan pulled his hamstring when reaching for a ball near the sideline and with no substitutes to bring on, Moynalvey had to play the remainder of the game with 14 men.
Moynalvey defended stoutly to strong waves of St Ultans pressure but gradually the hosts got on top and drew level with 5 minutes remaining. Two late scores then sealed victory for the home side and despite a gallant effort, Moynalvey were left to rue a number of second half wides as well as a disallowed goal for a square ball which seemed rather harsh.
